All Canadian Companies are required by law to have a Regulation First Aid Kit, including the self-employed. Large companies, those in isolated areas or engaging in high-hazard work will have additional requirements for
First Aid Supplies and Equipment; company and fleet vehicles also require a Vehicle First Aid Kit.
The applicable regulations are summarized on our pages for your convenience, organized by jurisdiction: Federal or Provincial.
Federal Type A,B,C,D First Aid Kits and Supplies
Federal regulations specify minimum requirements that employers must fill in order to ensure work sites have the equipment and supplies needed to provide first aid care in the event of a workplace injury or accident. Regulated by the Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (SOR/86-304), required first aid supplies in Canadian workplaces vary depending on the number of employees at the worksite. Each one of our workplace first aid kits is designed to service a specific number of employees and includes all the required first aid supplies to meet or exceed federal first aid kit requirements.
Employers should perform a site-specific hazard assessment to identify potential hazards that employees are exposed to at the place of work in order to fully understand and identify the special needs of the workers. Most employers choose a first aid kit that not only meets federal requirements but one that can properly handle any injuries or illnesses that are most likely to occur.
Choose from the following options:
Type A first aid kit - covers 2 to 5 employees at any one time.
Type B first aid kit - covers nearly twice as many employees, 6 or more and is designed for a workplace less than 2 hours travel from a medical facility.
Type C first aid kit - the most robust package covering 6 or more employees on staff at any given time and that are more than 2 hours travel from a medical facility.
Type D first aid kit – covers 1 to 3, travelling by snowmobile or other small vehicle, other than a truck, van or automobile.

Ensure your work site has the equipment and supplies needed to provide first aid care in the event of workplace illness or injury. Province regulations specify minimum requirements that employers must fill as federal legislation does with type A, B, C First Aid Kits.
In order to properly fill these requirements, employers should perform a site-specific assessment to identify potential hazards that employees are exposed to at the place of work. This hazard assessment will identify the individual needs of the workers in order to choose a first aid kit that not only meets provincial requirements but one that can properly handle the most likely problems to occur like:
WSIB First Aid Kit Requirements are based on the type of business and how many people are employed. Regardless of what type of first aid kit the business needs, it is important to make sure the kits are monitored for adequate supply levels on a regular basis to ensure they stay within the regulations.
